Our Warning to Online Retailers

A problematic Shopify integration, additional licensing fees for multiple languages, €3,588 in annual fees, a rejected early termination, and suddenly more than €3,600 in payment demands. We have involved our lawyer and are exploring coordinated legal action with other affected merchants.

How trustworthy is a company that sells trust when its own customers have to fight for fair contract terms and properly functioning services?

That is exactly the question we are asking after almost two years with Trusted Shops.

We operate iFlight Europe, an international Shopify store. Our experience with Trusted Shops has been so disappointing that we have decided to speak publicly about it.

Not out of revenge. Not as a smear campaign. But because we believe other businesses deserve to be warned about experiences like ours.

High Fees, Technical Issues, and Disappointing Support

For €299 per month, or €3,588 per year, we expected a professional and reliable review platform.

Instead, we repeatedly struggled with Shopify integration issues, unreliable multilingual functionality, and ongoing manual adjustments.

What we found particularly unreasonable was that additional language versions within the same online store required separate paid licenses.

Trusted Shops explicitly informed us:

“Each language version must be licensed separately in order to display the Trustbadge.”

Trusted Shops, email dated September 24, 2024 – translated from German.

Despite repeated complaints, the technical issues were never resolved to our satisfaction. As late as February 2026, Trusted Shops itself confirmed in writing that the integration was still incomplete.

We paid premium prices but did not receive the reliability we expected from a provider positioning itself as a trusted industry leader.

Switching Providers Showed Us How Unnecessary These Problems Were

We eventually replaced Trusted Shops with REVIEWS.io and Judge.me.

The integration works. The features we need are available. The cost is less than one-third of what we previously paid.

For us, the comparison was eye-opening.

What had caused ongoing frustration and manual work with Trusted Shops was handled far more effectively by alternative providers.

Want to Cancel? Not So Easy With Trusted Shops.

On June 16, 2026, we terminated our membership with immediate effect due to recurring technical problems.

Trusted Shops refused to accept the early termination and insists that our contract continues until September 2027.

Their justification: a three-month notice period before the end of the contractual year.

In other words, despite the significant technical issues we reported and the fact that we had already deactivated their service, Trusted Shops maintains that we remain obligated to pay for another contractual year.

This raises a serious question:

How fair is a contract that continues to bind a dissatisfied business customer despite documented technical problems?

The legal validity of our early termination remains disputed.

Suddenly €3,615.56 – With the Threat of Debt Collection

What happened next was particularly alarming.

On September 28, 2026, we received a payment reminder totaling €304.53.

Just two weeks later, on October 12, 2026, Trusted Shops issued a final reminder for €3,615.56, referencing the same invoice number.

A principal amount of €299 had suddenly become €3,588 – equivalent to twelve monthly payments at once.

The final reminder did not provide a clear explanation for this substantial increase.

Trusted Shops also indicated that the matter could be referred to a debt collection agency.

We consider this approach extremely unreasonable and deeply disappointing, particularly given our long-standing and documented contractual dispute.

We expressly dispute these payment demands.

Our Lawyer Is Involved. We Will Not Simply Accept This.

We have instructed a lawyer to review the contract, its termination provisions, and the outstanding payment demands.

In our preliminary assessment, there are serious questions regarding the legal validity and enforceability of certain contractual provisions and financial claims.

In particular, we are examining the legal implications of the technical problems we experienced and whether they justify early termination.

We are fully prepared to pursue our rights through the courts if necessary.

Just because Trusted Shops insists that its contractual terms apply does not automatically mean every demand is legally enforceable. That is precisely what we are now challenging and reviewing.

We Are Not Alone – And We Want to Connect With Other Affected Merchants

Other online retailers have publicly reported difficulties involving cancellations, automatic contract renewals, customer support, and payment demands.

We have already contacted other merchants who have shared similar experiences in public reviews.

We are actively exploring whether coordinated legal action against Trusted Shops, supported by legal counsel, would be appropriate and feasible.

This is not about organizing a smear campaign or damaging a company for the sake of it.

It is about transparency, examining potential legal claims, and ensuring affected businesses do not have to deal with these issues in isolation.

Our Conclusion: A Trust Badge Is No Guarantee of Fair Business Practices

Trusted Shops operates a business built around promoting trust between consumers and online retailers.

That is precisely why we believe such a company should be held to particularly high standards of transparency, service quality, and fair treatment of customer complaints.

Our experience was the opposite of what we would expect from a trustworthy business relationship.

We strongly encourage other merchants to scrutinize the contractual terms, renewal conditions, and technical promises before signing up.

Based on our experience, we would not choose Trusted Shops again.

And we will not remain silent about our experience simply because a large service provider insists on enforcing its interpretation of a contract.

Trust cannot be bought with a badge. It has to be earned.
